TEST STAND / CONTROL ROOM NOISE CONTROL DESIGN

The GE Turbine Test Facility was developed to accommodate custom engine test stands for some of the world's largest power generation turbines. These turbines generate deafening sound levels, requiring advanced noise control measures to protect personnel while limiting environmental noise emissions to the surrounding community.

Test Stand 8, designed for the 450 MW 9H gas turbine, received CECG's Engineering Excellence Grand Award in 1999 and was later recognized as a finalist in the National Engineering Excellence Awards competition.

BWS conducted field measurements, evaluated GE sound power data, and developed three-dimensional SoundPLAN models to predict and control facility noise levels. Following construction, GE engineers confirmed the model predictions to within 2 dBA at critical off-site receptor locations.

The control rooms required highly engineered wall assemblies to isolate the intense low-frequency energy generated during turbine testing. The resulting environment was so quiet that engineers often relied on a microphone feed from the test stand to verify the turbine's operating sound.

Working with Emprise Corporation, BWS designed acoustical solutions for the turbine, intake and exhaust systems, building facade, and large ventilation systems, creating a low-noise environment for both the control rooms and the surrounding community.

Reflecting on the significance of the project, Ron Dubose, principal of Emprise Corporation, remarked, "This is the absolute zenith of our engineering careers. It's like a football team that has played in the Super Bowl for the first time. It helps to have that experience."
